BUDGET Kitchen MAKEOVER

HOW TO:  A QUICK KITCHEN MAKEOVER

This kitchen is a study in a cost-effective makeover. On buying the property, we knew we would eventually renovate the back of the home, including a new kitchen. But with that project at least 5 years away, we needed a quick solution that wouldn't break the bank, but would get us through the next few years. The secret? A simple, good quality paint job.

THE WORK

  • The solid pine cabinetry was repainted in Dulux Vivid White

  • New handles were added

  • The dated brown tiles (complete with a colourful fruit feature tile), was also painted white - creating a french-country vibe we weren't expecting

  • Old lino was pulled up and the floorboards refinished with a walnut stain and a satin water-based coat of clear lacquer

  • Two simple light fittings completed the very simple makeover

THE COST

All work was completed for around $2500 from start to finish.

THE TAKEOUT

Nine years later, this kitchen is still going strong, and we'll be sad to see its last days as we embark on our long-awaited renovation.
