Creating a calming home office space through thoughtful interior design is crucial not just for productivity, but for your own mental health and well-being. We all want spaces that are uncluttered and organised, to help us stay focussed and productive, even creative. It should also blend seamlessly with your home’s design, and not be a room that style forgot. When designing your home office, you should choose a style that reflects the style of your home and your particular interests and passions. Or in other words, aim to create a home office that doesn’t necessarily look like one. These rooms are often multipurpose,  perhaps also functioning as a guest room, a playroom or just part of the living space. In the example above, a classic Thonet chair replaces the traditional office chair and a vintage desk with some charm and patina makes a practical but beautiful working surface. Adding art and objet d’art is essential for charm and personality.

Home office design with a soothing colour palette

When designing your home office, you should choose a style that reflects the style of your home. The space should be well lit, and if you opt for colour, choose soothing hues like muted blues, greens, or warm neutrals. Avoid overly bright or jarring colours – these are simply too distracting! However, if you’re a creative type or just really love bright colours - if they truly make your heart sing – then, fire at will.

Modern home office design should incorporate natural elements 

Bringing natural elements into your work or study area has a calming effect on the mind. Pot plants, timber furniture, or stone vessels are some of the ways you can do this. Plants can also enhance air quality and overall well-being, plus they just bring natural beauty, so if you have to pick just one, start there. We’re partial to sturdy succulents for their longevity, and a Peace Lily is welcome survivor in any home office! Aim to water your plants three times a week.

Choose a home office desk and storage solutions that are multi-purpose

Invest in storage solutions, like floating shelves or cabinets, to keep your workspace tidy and minimise distractions. Reducing visual clutter can really help you stay focussed, too. If your workspace tends to get a little messy, then lean towards a desk with deep drawers where you can scoop away mess and focus on the detail of your work.
