Selling Houses Australia Maroubra: an elegant style revival

A sophisticated update for Maroubra, NSW

The team from Selling Houses Australia took on the renovation of a semi-detached home in the beachside suburb of Maroubra, New South Wales in episode 6 of season 15. Homeowner Romano and his two daughters were looking to find him a new, more accessible home following the sad passing of his wife of nearly 60 years. Romano absolutely adored living in Maroubra, despite the home’s location on a busy main road. Other deterrents to the sale included the home’s clunky floorplan and decidedly tired vibe. Luckily, bathroom renovations were not needed, allowing interior designer Wendy Moore’s kitchen design ideas to take a bigger share of the budget.

Wendy was ready to take on the challenge, bringing with her a vision of elegance and sophistication that would allow the home’s heritage features to shine. Landscape designer Dennis Scott had to transform the facade, level the backyard and create a family-friendly backyard to broaden the home’s appeal to young families. The team ultimately delivered a home embodying modern sophistication, with a spacious budget kitchen renovation and rejigged floorplan guaranteed to turn some heads.

A sophisticated living room update

This lovely living area had great bones. Wendy enhanced them by painting the interiors in an elegant coat of Cave from Wattyl. She brought in a new electric fireplace from Jetmaster that really suits the heritage vibe, and kept the palette simple. The whole space is framed by classic, light-enhancing sheer Duette blinds and curtains, both Luxaflex.

Compact kitchen renovation ideas

This compact kitchen is now a not-so-little stunner! To get the most out of this kitchen, the team knocked down a partition wall and were able to bring in a new island, getting more storage and completely changing the vibe. Cabinetry including open steel shelving and internals is from Kaboodle, available at Bunnings; benchtops in Basalt Cemento by Granite Transformations; small appliances by Morphy Richards.

“We wanted to create a home and layout that would appeal to families, so enlarging the kitchen made a lot of sense” ~ interiors expert Wendy Moore

Selling Houses Australia, Maroubra master bedroom

Located at the front of the home, the master bedroom benefitted from the installation of a brand-new casement style window – and the removal of security bars – that allowed for some extra light flow. Then, it was about enhancing some existing features with wallpaper and paint; this is Metropolis wallpaper by Catherine Martin for Mokum. The bed from Snooze is another classic inclusion; it’s the Memphis Classic Wing Bed Frame from Snooze.

Did the Selling Houses Australia Maroubra home sell?

But did the Maroubra home sell? ”Hopefully this can sell, but I guess that rather than meeting the market now, they’d prefer to wait for the right offer - whether that will come – who knows?” says Wendy Moore. We’ll update you if new information comes to hand.

We’ll be sharing each renovation of the latest season of Selling Houses Australia as it airs. Never miss an update by subscribing to The Interiors Edit.
