Selling Houses Australia’s style revival in Como

Como, New South Wales

It was an absolutely enormous brief for this renovation for the Selling Houses Australia team at Como, NSW. The home of Gareth and Esther was not only dated (according to Andrew Winter, it screamed ‘1980s Queensland hotel resort’), it had six bedrooms! In fact, the floorplan was so huge and the budget so tight, the team couldn’t even tackle all the rooms. Wendy focussed her budget on bringing in lots of light, rejigging the floorplan to offer more usable living spaces and redoing the large family bathroom upstairs, bringing a fresh and new coastal vibe to the space that was sorely needed.

Kitchen: The kitchen wasn’t terrible, meaning interior designer Wendy Moore was able to focus her energy on some smaller aesthetic updates, like a new splashback in Shape Carrara Gold Large Hexagon Satin Mosaic tiles from Beaumont Tiles. This helped to lighted and brighten the space, and gave it a less, er, distinctive style point of view.

Living room: In the living area, that bright red feature wall just had to go! This zone was painted in fresh Rain Forest Cloud by Wattyl. Wendy looked to natural tones and textures to create a soft, inviting living space that invites relaxation. Timber furniture is a hallmark of classic coastal style, offering broad appeal to potential buyers. A Huxley rug in Natural from Flooring Xtra underpins the whole look.

“I wanted to highlight the possibilities of this home by focussing on some key areas, so it felt less overwhelming to potential buyers” ~ interiors expert Wendy Moore

Dining room: One of the biggest challenges of this home was that it felt gloomy and dark, and desperately needed some natural light. Furniture choice and paint colour helped, as did framing the windows in Luxaflex light-filtering Silhouette shadings. The dining area, styled up with classic Wishbone replica chairs (try Temple & Webster for similar), features a matching Huxley rug in Natural from Flooring Xtra, which creates a sense of cohesion and flow in what was quite a big room.

Bathroom: This family bathroom desperately needed an overhaul, and now it simply sings with gorgeous style! The feature tiles are Cascade Terrazzo Bianco Carrara from Decor8 offset by classic Sicily Stone in White Matt from Beamonts. Also at Beaumont Tiles, you’ll find the Kingsley vanity with Carrara top, Modern Oblong framed mirror in Brushed Brass and Lina hardware in Brushed Gold. The statement bath? It’s the Nero freestanding model.

Bedroom: THIS is how you do colour! Owner Ester actually doesn’t mind a tropical print, but her version was more pop than perfection. Here’s how to recreate the look: Wendy chose a Denmark bed frame in Queen and matching bedsides from Snooze, dressed in a Willamine quilt in Vanilla and Toro Stillwater circular cushion from Linen House. The walls are painted in a bold Burnt Butter Sage from Wattyl with window dressings block-out Duettes from Luxaflex. The Korova bedside lamp and Tambura pendant are both from from The Lighting Outlet Sydney.

Did Selling Houses Australia Como sell?

While Gareth and Esther haven’t found a buyer yet at a sale price they are happy with, they were able to rent it out, which means they are now finally living their dream and travelling around the country.
