Home Love Part 4: Transforming an indoor‑outdoor zone on a budget

In Part 4 of my Home Love series, I can reveal one of the biggest changes in my investment property makeover: the backyard’s impressive update. Watch it now!

Home Love: Outdoor living reveal! Wendy Moore transforms an indoor‑outdoor zone on a budget

If you’ve been following my Home Love renovation series, you’ll know I’m all about clever updates that make a home feel beautiful, functional and ready for the next family to enjoy. Today, I’m so excited to reveal one of my favourite changes in this budget renovation: an indoor‑outdoor refresh that proves you don’t need a huge amount of money to make a huge impact.

Imagine this space as it was: plain, underused and disconnected from the heart of the home. Now? It’s a hardworking, welcoming, and sun‑soaked extension of the living zone. Exactly what every Aussie backyard should be.

A simple but effective outdoor refresh

This transformation was all about connection. I wanted a space that flowed effortlessly from the kitchen and living room straight out to the backyard, a space where family and friends would naturally gather.

What we started with was a typical older‑style outdoors, with an old lean-to at the back of the house:: a bit tired, a bit awkward and definitely not living up to its potential. We knocked off the back of the house, and added a new extension to enable a larger kitchen, laundry and new living space, and added a new deck.

By focusing on just a few smart changes - new decking, bi-fold doors and servery windows from Alidoor, and thoughtful styling (the team at Duo Studio helped stage this property) - we created a zone that feels polished, practical and completely in tune with the rest of the home.

A little help from my friends

If you look closely at the video, you can see one of my friends giving me a hand! My co-host from Selling Houses Australia Dennis Scott was instrumental in helping me complete this renovation on a budget – right down to helping lay the turf in the backyard!

And honestly? I love how this space works now. It’s perfect for family barbecues, long lunches or even just a quiet morning coffee in the sun. That’s the beauty of an indoor‑outdoor zone that truly belongs to the home.

Design heroes that make it sing

The heroes of this transformation were all about creating visual and physical flow:

  • A clean, durable deck that links the kitchen seamlessly to the lawn

  • Soft, neutral finishes that mirror the interior palette (inspired by my love of a coastal interior palette)

  • Simple styling that keeps the focus on the greenery and natural light

These choices make the outdoor zone feel like an extension of the home rather than an afterthought, something you feel the moment you step through the back door.

Bringing the inside out

One of the biggest successes of this project is how naturally the movement flows from inside to outside. The kitchen and living spaces now spill into the backyard with ease, creating one cohesive lifestyle zone rather than two disconnected areas.

It’s incredible how much difference it makes when outdoor spaces are thoughtfully tied into the home’s design. Suddenly, the whole house feels bigger, brighter and more welcoming.

I hope this makeover inspires you to fall in love with the outdoor potential of your own home! If you missed the rest of the series, start here with Part 1, home renovation planning. Then move over to the Kitchen and Laundry. And you can find the bathrooms on here, too! Between the the floorplan update and the full before and after renovation, this has been one of my favourite projects to share for interior design inspiration.
