Paris comes to Roselands

Roselands, NSW

It was hard to believe that this freestanding home in Sydney’s Roselands wasn’t built in the 1990s - the dated interiors definitely didn’t reflect the warmth of the homeowners Tom and Mary. After spending years saving for their home, the couple were hit with the news that Mary had developed a genetic condition that would slowly reduce her mobility, and suddenly the double-story house they always planned to make their forever home became a trap from which they couldn’t seem to free themselves.

Updating an open-plan zone

The dated interior masked a functional floor plan, so most of the changes were cosmetic. The monochrome scheme extended to the floor, with the softness of a deep grey timber finish - Audacity in Mountain Grey, from Flooring Xtra, and the luxury of velvet fabrics in the furniture combined with fresh and light window furnishings from Luxaflex and light fittings including the Olympia pendant light from The Lighting Outlet Sydney.

A kitchen reborn with a hit of glamour

Working with Glaze Master to resurface the solid pine cabinetry was the first step in updating this tired kitchen. The deep charcoal of Wattyl Noir lent a chic Parisian air to the space, with the upper cabinets finished in Wattyl White, making the space feel more airy and open. Granite Transformations came in to replace the benchtop, and to keep the elegance of the look we chose Kaolinite for both the benchtop and splash back. Stunning polished nickel handles from Mother of Pearl & Sons completed the look.

“With a limited budget and a big project, I had to focus my attention on some key areas that I felt would be the most impactful” ~ interiors expert Wendy Moore

Delightful dining room renovation on Selling Houses Australia

Part of the open-plan area, all the dining room needed was the right sized and shaped table and a set of elegant, comfortable chairs. Wendy went with a 1.6m-round table, perfect for family dining and facilitating conversation, and matched the fabric of the chairs to those chosen in the living room furniture – which was all hired for staging the home effectively. The blinds are from Luxaflex.

Luxurious living with a French twist

The living areas desperately needed some warmth – wall to wall light-coloured ceramic tiles were sucking all the vibrancy out of the space. The solution was to lay over the top with Audacity laminate boards in Mountain Grey from Flooring Xtra. “I just adore the warm grey undertone of this flooring solution,” says Wendy. Along with paint (majority in Wattyl ‘Spirit Grey’), it lifted the whole home. Love this look? Read our blog on how to get a French contemporary living room look here.

Reclaiming unused space in Roselands: landing

There was another space that was being underutilised at the top of the stairs - it’s now a Parisian chic sitting area, but could equally function as a playroom or study space. It’s a flexible option for this well-built home and for future buyers.

Roselands bedroom feature wall

“The master bedroom was a fantastic opportunity to bring some drama without spending a fortune. I wanted you to walk into the room and feel instantly cosy and relaxed,” says Wendy. “I decided to go for earthy tones and textures. Smoky ash timbers, soft linens and muted pastels.” A geometric feature wall ties with the new European, Parisian feel of the home. To create it, Wendy cut timber batons to size and attached them to the wall in a ‘squashed diamond’ shape. This created the effect of visually lengthening the room, adding texture and enhancing the sense of space. The dark hue actually makes the wall recede, when paired with the lighter colours on the other walls. It also helps the room feel like an intimate retreat.

Did Selling Houses Australia Roselands sell?

Selling in a dropping market is a tricky task, even for this amazing Roselands home. But Tom and Mary understand that they’re also buying their next property while the prices are down. By listing it at $1.35 million they sold a few weeks later and took a huge step towards a mortgage-free life and a new more suitable home they can enjoy together. We wish them all the best!
